Dr. Ernst Bruno von Gersdorff was born on 18 Jul 1820 in Eisencach, Saxony, Germany to Heinrich August, Baron von Gersdorff (1793 - 1874) and Augusta Theodora von Tschirschky und Bogendorf ( - 1883) and died on 29 Jun 1883 in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA. He married Caroline Choate (1834 - 1874). On Jul 1863 he was still living in Salem and in 1871 he was living in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts as he was a professor of pathology and therapeutics at Boston University. He is buried in Harmony Grove Cemetery in Salem, Massachusetts. In 1848 he arrived in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, USA. He settled in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts. In 1883 he graduated from the Boston Latin School in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, USA. In 1887 he graduated from Harvard College. He attended Harvard Law but did not graduate. In 1889 he arrived in Manhattan, New York, USA where he competed his education for the bar as a clerk at his uncle's law firm, Evarts, Choate & Beaman. In 1865 he moved to Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, USA and became a professor in pathology and therapeutics at Boston University. He stayed there until after his admission to the New York bar. In Mar 1802 he left to become Managing Cler, of the Seward office. He was the personal secretary of Hon. Joseph Hodges Choate.

Through his mother, a great grandfather of Dr. Ernsts was Heinrich XXIX, Princely Count von Ruess-Ebersdorff who was born on 21 Jul 1699 in Ebersdorff, Thuringia, Germany and died on 22 May 1747 in Herrnhaag, Germany. He married Sophie Theodora, Countess von Castell-Remlingen who was born on 12 May 1703 in Castell, Kitzingen, Bavaria, Germany and died on 8 Jan 1777 in Herrnhut, Saxony, Germany. Through Heinrich XXIX he is illegitimately descended from Maximilian I von Habsburg, Holy Roman Emperor, King of the Romans, Archduke of Austria (1459-1519 through a mistress of his. Maximilian’s parents were Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, King of the Romans, Archduke of Austria (1415-1493) and Princess Eleanor of Portugal (1434-1467). He is descended from King John I of Denmark, Norway and Sweden (1455-1513), King Casmir IV Jagiellon of Poland (1427-1492), King John de Valois of France (1319-1364), King Casmir III Piast the Great of Poland (1310-1370) and Johann V von Ascania, Prinz von Anhalt-Zerbst (1504-1551). Through Princess Eleanor of Portugal, von Gersdorff was a descendant of King Edward III of England and Lord of Ireland (1312-1377) and Philippa of Hainault, Queen consort of England (c.1310/15-1369).
